About Preferences
The Preferences tool allows you to change your font settings, paging preferences, discussion room layout, and email preferences (including AutoForward D2L Email messages) . Customizing your personal settings is a great way to ensure that you are comfortable in your learning environment.
Access Preferences
On your My Home page the Preferences link is located in the Welcome box,
Click My Preferences
The My Preferences page displays
Change font
Your fonts are available from the General tab.
1. Use the drop-down lists to select a font type and size.
2. Click SAVE.
The Preview box displays a sample of your new font setting.
Change the paging value
This paging value allows you to limit or expand the number of search results you see for certain tools.
1. Select the Paging tab.
2. Use the drop-down lists to select paging values
3. Click SAVE
Change Discussion Preferences
If your instructor has set them up then use the Discussions to communicate with classmates to discuss readings, projects, or additional resources that you have found to be useful. Select the layout and organization of your discussion forums and topics from this page to make sure you get the most out of using this tool.
TIP If you do not have much experience with the Discussion tool, then you may want to revisit this area after you have become more familiar with it in order to determine your ideal preferences.
In the Display Settings area you can choose to
-
Show the discussion topics list
-
Show the search bar
-
Show the preview pane
In the Default Message List View area you can decide to view messages in a Threaded View or Un-threaded View. The threaded view can be useful to follow the conversations that you and your fellow students are having in the discussion boards.
In the Message List Style area you can view things as you have historically in D2L with the Grid Style or you can try the new Reading Style. If you use the Reading Style then for every message you read you must click the "Mark As Read" link so that your instructor can see that you have read it. Otherwise it will appear as if you have not read any messages. The Grid Style marks them as read when you view each one.
In the Message Fields to Display area you can choose to display Student Id and Message Id. The Message Id may be useful for you, but it may be extra clutter on the screen. The Student Id field is a useless number as D2L does not store UA Student ID Numbers.
In the Character Limits area you can Limit the number of characters of the subject to display in the Message List. If you check this box then you can use the nex box to set the number characters to display in the subject line for Discussion Board messages.
In the Reply Settings area you can decide if you want to include original message text in reply message that you create.
D2L E-mail Settings
You can do several different things with the D2L Email tool, but if you do not want to check D2L for email messages then please make sure to set your D2L Email to AutoForward to an email account that you answer regularly. It can be any email account that you want to use.
In the Email Options area you can decide if you want to
-
Track activity for messages sent to internal email addresses
-
Include original message in email replies
-
Send a copy of each outgoing message to ___________________ (an external email account)
-
Save a copy of each outgoing message to the 'Sent Mail' folder
-
'Reply to' Email Address: (it can be different then your D2L Email address, which is your NetID@D2L.arizona.edu
-
Email Signature: In HTML (anything you type into this box will automatically be displayed at the bottom of a new email message)
In the Display Options area you can decide to:
- Show the Message Preview pane (when looking at messages sent to you, do they open in a new window or in the Message Preview Pane at the bottom of the page. We recommend using the Message Preview Pane as some Pop-Up Blockers interfere with the new window)
- Show the Folder List pane (it appears on the left side of the screen and can be useful for navigating your email folders)
- Mark messages as read when viewed in the Message Preview pane (highly recommended that you turn this on)
- Show internal email addresses in the Address Book
- Show external email addresses in the Address Book
- Allow filtering messages and contacts on group enrollment
In the Forwarding Options you have three choices. If you only want to check one email address for messages then we highly recommend that you turn this on and forward all your D2L Email to that account.
- Forward incoming messages to an alternate email account
- Email Address _______________________ (enter the desired address that you will check regularly)
- forward and delete from the Inbox folder
- forward and mark unread in the Inbox folder
- forward and mark read in the Inbox folder (we highly recommend this option out of the three possible choices)
Change the pager sound
Set this preference to recieve visual notification when someone pages you and select your pager sound. Please be aware that many instructors do not use the Pager tool so before paging them make sure to check to see what communication methods they use with students. They may only read emails and not answer pages.
If the pager icon is OFF, you will still receive incoming pages. However, you must check for pages manually by clicking on the pager and selecting from the list.
1. Select the Pager tab.
2. Turn the pager icon on or off.
3. Choose a page sound from the options.
4. Click SAVE
You will hear the sound the next time you receive a page.
