Depending on the circumstances of what you are trying to accomplish with D2L and the number of users involved these roles are available to you. To change a user's role in your course please send an email to D2L@email.arizona.edu with the user's First Name, Last Name, NetID, UA Webmail address and the course name and section number (example: ENGL102 004). Only the instructor of record for the course can request a role change.
Instructor
Responsibilities: has ultimate control over the D2L course landscape including the creation and deletion of content, grade set-up, group setup, making a course active or inactive, edit functions, creating quizzes, adding components and managing the overall look and feel of the D2L course site environment. The Instructor appears in the Class list as a true Instructor.
Instructor Associate
Responsibilities: typically assigned to a co-Instructor of a course who does not have any of the designing responsibilities for a course but still wants students to be able to contact them using email. Instructor Associate (IA) appears on the Classlist under the Staff tab as Instructor. This role allows the IA to see course tools and materials but does not allow for creation, edits, or deletions to a course. IA basically functions as a student with some exceptions. Along with access to the Locker tool they can actively participate in Discussion, and Chat. They have the ability to preview a quiz but cannot see results. The IA CANNOT access Grade tool, Role Switch, or Dropbox.
Support Staff
Responsibilities: same as regular Instructor except they cannot see and therefore cannot make, any changes to the Grades tool.
TA – All Sections
Responsibilities: Teaching Assistant (TA) can access all course sections (i.e., content, view users, enters scores into grade tool) but cannot create items and categories in grade tools. In this role TA – All Sections can add and edit materials anywhere in any tool but they cannot delete material or item(s).
TA – Specific Sections
Responsibilities: same privileges as TA – All Sections except Instructor decides which section to enroll the TA into. Instructor can also choose which groups if any to put the TA into under Manage Groups inside the Class list tool. If the TA is not put into a section then they will see an Internal Error message when they click on Grades in the Navigation Bar (NavBar).
TA – Grader All Sections
Responsibilities: can access all sections Grade tools (Grades, Quizzes, and Dropbox) with normal TA privileges. Everywhere else they have Student level privileges.
TA – Grader - Specific Sections
Responsibilities: same privileges as TA – Grader All Sections, but they can only access the section(s) Grade tools that the Instructor directs D2L to put them into (i.e., TRAD101 001-024 Smith – TA Jones given access to only TRAD101 Sections 002 and 016). Everywhere else they have Student level privileges. If they are not put into a section then they will see an Internal Error message when they click on Grades in the NavBar.
Student
Responsibilities: students taking courses are automatically enrolled in the course based upon their being listed on the official UA Class list. They can access Content, Grades, and Email. Students can actively participate in Discussion, Chat and Quizzes. They can upload their course material into the Dropbox.
Student Technology Preceptor
Responsibilities: generally this role is for students enrolled in a course who assist their Instructor in the use of technology to support instruction. This role mimics the responsibilities of an Instructor, but without Grade tool access. There is a limitation to this role as well involving the Grade book. The Student Tech Preceptor will not appear in the Grade book like a regular student and therefore their grades can not be tracked like a typical student’s can.
Student – See ‘Inactive’
Responsibilities: same privileges as Student except sees Inactive Course(s). Typical use of this role is for students needing to fulfill an incomplete requirement(s) for a course. The Instructor is responsible for contacting D2L support staff to remove the student from this role once the criteria for completion have been met.
Guest
Responsibilities: extremely restricted. A Guest can basically only see Content. They have no access to Grade book, Discussion, Quizzes. This is to ensure that FERPA guidelines are adhered to.
